Before choosing a designer - be aware of what to LOOK FOR

Here, I'll try to sum up my point before I begin to make it. There are some things a website should come with as a STANDARD. If there's any one lesson to take away from this article when speaking to myself, another designer, or agency it is this: STAY - AWAY - FROM - THE - ITEMIZER! If you've taken time to shop for a designer for your project then surely you've run into one if not several. They treat a project as if the only things that should come standard are some light graphic design and a framework to make the site function. Then they sell you on organic SEO and how painstaking it is to implement. -$-  You'll probably want a Flash intro or some sort of nifty animated modules to implement into your navigation. -$- A contact form? Sure why not? Of course that will be -$-

Sure, there are some things that will most certainly be outside the bounds of what would come with a minimal advertising based site, such as E-commerce functionality, extensive Flash Animation, a site heavy in video and multimedia. But while I've got you here please allow me to list what I provide with my standard websites where a price is arrived upon by the time I feel the site will take to produce.

AT A MINIMUM

• Full Graphic Design Package
• Site Functionality and Framework
• Content Management System (you can update your own site with ease - no html experience required)
• Social Networking on Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube (others upon request)
• SEO -or- Search Engine Optimization with a focus on the big 3, Google, Yahoo, and BING
• Extensive Contact Form (as basic or detailed as you need)
• Multi-Administrator Functionality
• Login Required Password Protected Site Areas (restrict access to certain areas of your site to members who sign up)
• Multiple Email Addresses
• Photo Galleries (stylish jQuery photo viewing. no more picture pop up windows or Flash galleries with heavy load times)
• WOW Effect Plug-Ins and Modules (if you see something on this site that makes you think, "You don't see that on every website!", most likely it's offered without additional fee!)

Don't be fooled by fluffy tech-filled double talk. A lot of designers want to make the maintenance and implementation of very basic site features sound like a feat you could never handle without their help. Some of the time they are right. But I'm here to let you know that there is NOTHING listed above that you should ever be charged an exorbitant "extra" fee for.
